This intriguing ancient city is located in the region of Basilicata, standing as a testament to human resilience and ingenuity. Known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Underground City), Matera boasts a history that dates back to the Palaeolithic Era, making it one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Carved into the limestone cliffs of the Murgia plateau, Matera’s unique architecture showcases a seamless blend of primitive cave dwellings and rock-cut churches, creating an awe-inspiring tapestry of human endeavor.
